WHAT ARE ALUXES?

The Aluxes, in Mayan "Alux" and in the plural "aluxo ob", are in Mayan mythology, little goblins or elves that live in natural places such as jungles, caves, or cenotes. They resemble human beings, but the difference is that they are small, about the height of the knees of any human being.

It is said that these goblins dress as ancient Mayans and play tricks on those who do not leave their offerings.

In addition, they are capable of frightening or protecting travelers and people who visit their favorite places.

It is still believed that when one builds a house or a corn field, one must leave offerings and make an altar to these beings; for they help the maize grow, calling for rain, and watch over the fields at night, whistling to alert thieves.
